What Is a Clicker
A clicker is a small device that makes a consistent, distinct "click" sound. It serves as a bridge signal — it marks the precise moment your dog performs the desired behavior, bridging the gap between the behavior and the treat delivery. The click is faster and more precise than a verbal marker.
Charging the Clicker
Before using the clicker for training, your dog needs to learn that click equals treat. In a quiet room, click and immediately deliver a treat. Repeat 20 to 30 times over a few sessions. You will know it is working when your dog's ears perk up or they look at you expectantly upon hearing the click.
Using the Clicker in Training
Click the exact moment your dog does what you want, then treat within 2 seconds. One click always equals one treat, even if you click at the wrong time. Click for effort and small improvements, not just perfect performance. This approach, called shaping, lets you build complex behaviors in small steps.
When to Fade the Clicker
The clicker is a teaching tool, not a permanent crutch. Once your dog performs a behavior reliably on cue, you can switch to a verbal marker and intermittent treats. The clicker comes back out whenever you are teaching something new or refining an existing behavior.
