Core Vaccines Every Dog Needs
Core vaccines protect against diseases that are widespread, severe, or transmissible to humans. These include rabies (required by law in most areas), distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus. These are given as a combination shot (DHPP) starting at 6 to 8 weeks and boosted every 3 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks.
Lifestyle Vaccines
Non-core vaccines are recommended based on your dog's risk factors. Bordetella (kennel cough) is important for dogs who visit daycare, groomers, or boarding facilities. Leptospirosis is recommended in areas with wildlife exposure. Canine influenza and Lyme vaccines may be recommended in certain regions.
The Puppy Schedule
Puppies receive maternal antibodies through nursing, but these fade between 6 and 16 weeks. The series of vaccines given during this period ensures protection as maternal immunity wanes. Missing or delaying vaccines during this window leaves your puppy vulnerable to preventable diseases.
Adult Booster Schedule
After the puppy series, dogs receive a booster at one year, then every 1 to 3 years depending on the vaccine and your vet's protocol. Rabies boosters follow local legal requirements. Your vet may recommend titer testing — a blood test measuring antibody levels — to determine if boosters are needed.
