Home Grooming Basics: Keeping Your Dog Clean and Comfortable

Why Grooming Matters

Grooming is not cosmetic — it is health care. Regular brushing removes dead hair, distributes natural oils, and lets you spot lumps, ticks, or skin irritation early. Nail trimming prevents pain and posture problems. Ear cleaning prevents infections that can become chronic and expensive to treat.

Brushing for Every Coat Type

Short-haired dogs need weekly brushing with a rubber curry brush or bristle brush. Medium-coated dogs benefit from a slicker brush 2 to 3 times per week. Long-haired and double-coated breeds need daily brushing with a combination of tools to prevent mats. Always brush before bathing, as water tightens mats.

Bathing Without Stress

Most dogs need a bath every 4 to 6 weeks unless they get dirty sooner. Use a dog-specific shampoo — human products can disrupt skin pH. Lukewarm water, a non-slip mat, and a calm voice go a long way. Rinse thoroughly to prevent residue irritation. Introduce baths gradually with treats and praise.

Nail Trimming and Ear Care

Trim nails every 2 to 3 weeks before they touch the ground when your dog stands. Use sharp clippers or a Dremel tool. Clip small amounts to avoid the quick. For ears, check weekly for redness, odor, or discharge. Clean with a vet-approved ear solution and cotton balls, never cotton swabs.
