Why Make Your Own Treats
Commercial treats can contain fillers, artificial colors, and preservatives. When you make treats at home, you know exactly what your dog is eating. Homemade treats are also great for dogs with food sensitivities because you can customize ingredients. Plus, they are cheaper per treat than premium store-bought options.
Peanut Butter Banana Bites
Mash one ripe banana with two tablespoons of natural peanut butter (check that it does not contain xylitol). Mix in enough oat flour to form a dough. Roll into small balls and flatten slightly on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes until firm. Store in the refrigerator for up to one week.
Sweet Potato Chews
Slice sweet potatoes into thin strips about a quarter inch thick. Place on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake at 250 degrees for 2 to 3 hours, flipping halfway through, until they are dried and chewy. These are a natural, single-ingredient treat that most dogs love.
Ingredients to Always Avoid
Never use xylitol (found in some peanut butters), chocolate, grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, or nutmeg. When in doubt about an ingredient, leave it out. Treats should make up no more than 10 percent of your dog's daily calories.
