Why Recall Is Non-Negotiable
A reliable recall can literally save your dog's life — whether they slip their leash near traffic, approach a dangerous animal, or head toward a hazard you can see but they cannot. It also opens the door to off-leash freedom in appropriate settings. Without it, your dog's world stays small.
Building the Foundation
Start indoors with zero distractions. Say your recall word ("come" or a unique word like "here") in an upbeat voice, then immediately reward with the best treat you have. Repeat 10 times per session. Your dog should start turning toward you the moment they hear the word. Never use the recall word when you are about to do something your dog dislikes.
Adding Distance and Distraction
Gradually increase distance: hallways, then fenced yards, then longer distances on a long line. Add distractions one at a time. If your dog fails at a new level, go back to the previous level and rebuild. Use a 20 to 30 foot long line for safety during outdoor practice.
Rules for Maintaining Recall
Never call your dog to come and then punish them or do something unpleasant. Always reward generously. Make coming to you the best thing that happens. Vary your rewards — sometimes treats, sometimes play, sometimes just praise and release back to what they were doing.
